Book Children's Engagement in the World PDF Free

Children's Engagement in the World PDF
By:Artin Göncü
Published on 1999-05-13 by Cambridge University Press

This volume, first published in 1999, describes children's development in its cultural context. It stresses the point that children's development in diverse cultures follows different paths, depending on the developmental opportunities provided by their cultures. It illustrates that the everyday work at school, and play activities provided for children vary from one culture to another depending on the social and economical structure of children's cultures and adult beliefs about what is valuable for children's participation to secure optimal development. Thus, Children's Engagement in the World: Sociocultural Perspectives proposes to study children's development and education within its social as well as cultural context. It brings together the most recent theoretical advances in cultural psychology in order to establish a framework for the studies reported in it.

Book The Children's Culture Reader PDF Free

The Children's Culture Reader PDF
By:Henry Jenkins
Published on 1998-10-01 by NYU Press

Stock market euphoria and blind faith in the post cold war economy have driven the topic of poverty from popular and scholarly discussion in the United States. At the same time the gap between the rich and poor has never been wider. The New Poverty Studies critically examines the new war against the poor that has accompanied the rise of the New Economy in the past two decades, and details the myriad ways poor people have struggled against it. The essays collected here explore how global, national, and local structures of power produce poverty and affect the material well-being, social relations and politicization of the poor. In updating the 1960s encounter between ethnography and U.S. poverty, The New Poverty Studies highlights the ways poverty is constructed across multiple scales and multiple axes of difference. Questioning the common wisdom that poverty persists because of the pathology, social isolation and welfare state |dependency| of the poor, the contributors to The New Poverty Studies point instead to economic restructuring and neoliberal policy |reforms| which have caused increased social inequality and economic polarization in the U.S. Contributors include: Georges Fouron, Donna Goldstein, Judith Goode, Susan B. Hyatt, Catherine Kingfisher, Peter Kwong, Vin Lyon-Callo, Jeff Maskovsky, Sandi Morgen, Leith Mullings, Frances Fox Piven, Matthew Rubin, Nina Glick Schiller, Carol Stack, Jill Weigt, Eve Weinbaum, Brett Williams, and Patricia Zavella. |These contributions provide a dynamic understanding of poverty and immiseration| --North American Dialogue, Vol. 4, No. 1, Nov. 2001

Book Songs in Their Heads : Music and Its Meaning in Children's Lives PDF Free

Songs in Their Heads : Music and Its Meaning in Children's Lives PDF
By:Patricia Shehan Campbell Professor of Music Education University of Washington
Published on 1998-03-19 by Oxford University Press, USA

This book explores the musical interest and needs of children in their daily lives. Based upon their expressed thoughts and actual |musicking| behaviors, this text examines the songs they sing, the rythyms they make, and the roles that music plays for them. Blending standard education field experiences with ethnographic techniques, Dr. Campbell demonstrates how music is personally and socially meaningful to children and what values they place on particular musical styles, songs, and functions. He explores musical behaviors in various contextual settings, and presents in notated and narrative forms some of the |songs in their heads,| balancing music learned with music |made,| and intentional, purposeful music with natural musical behavior. Songs in Their Heads is a vivid and engaging book that bridges the disciplines of music education, musicology, ethnomusicology, and folklore. Designed as a text or supplemental text in a variety of music education method courses, as well as a reference for music specialists and classroom teachers, this book will also appeal to parents interested in understanding and enhancing music making in their children.

Book Rituals and Patterns in Children's Lives PDF Free

Rituals and Patterns in Children's Lives PDF
By:Kathy Merlock Jackson
Published on 2005 by Popular Press

Trick-or-treating. Flower girls. Bedtime stories. Bar and bat mitvah. In a nation of increasing ethnic, familial, and technological complexity, the patterns of children's lives both persist and evolve. This book considers how such events shape identity and transmit cultural norms, asking such questions as: * How do immigrant families negotiate between old traditions and new? * What does it mean when children engage in ritual insults and sick jokes? * How does playing with dolls reflect and construct feelings of racial identity? * Whatever happened to the practice of going to the Saturday matinee to see a Western? * What does it mean for a child to be (in the words of one bride) |flower-girl material|? How does that role cement a girl's bond to her family and initiate her into society? * What is the function of masks and costumes, and why do children yearn for these accoutrements of disguise? Rituals and Patterns in Children's Lives suggests the manifold ways in which America's children come to know their society and themselves.
